I have found substitution can be very helpful for audition situations with a reader. If I have some rehearsal time with my actual scene partner, then I don't bring substitution into the rehearsal room with me. But I find it can be useful as part of preparation and research. Then, as you say, I've loaded up my raft with supplies, and now it's time to push off into the river.
