I agree 100%. Also, I find it insulting to writers to tell actors to "just write a script" like it's easy. Imagine if we went up to screenwriters and said "Just star in your own movie and film it" Maybe they do, but that is nonsense. Being talented in 1 area does not automatically make you talented in others.

the amount of true, successful (non-instagram style) actors/content creators, we can collectively count on ONE hand! Remember, so many people in our field are complete frauds giving the appearance of success because the engine that drives this industry is the "image" of success. Just you do you, keep training, making connections, and doing what you love! Think about if this mantra about "you gotta create your own work" and would this fly in any other field? You're an Architect, you gotta build your own house/building.. you're a doctor? you gotta start your own hospital? Banker/finance.. why don't you open your own bank? Do we ask/demand this of literally ANY other profession? No, so fuck anyone who tells you are …

I just listened to a podcast about this. I agree that making content for the fun of it is a great idea, not with the expectation that it will launch your acting career.

We definitely hear from agents and managers that we need more reel footage, but I always want to “Create” more reel footage with higher goals in mind. These include wanting to work with friends, getting my husband’s script on it’s feet, learning how to use my new camera equipment, or any one of the 3,000 little short films I just want to see made (with or without me sometimes). And IF i’m going to be in it, the character should be one that I can play with my whole heart, good for casting to know who I am, and be creatively fulfilling. I made a short film crawling out of lockdown because I wanted to DO something with a friend…

I've heard "you have to create your own work because" and add your own reason. There are many. I have always answered No! I do not HAVE to do anything. I understand the desire to create and follow that but to be required to to advance a career is defeating the purpose of being creative. I have no desire to create my own film, be a director, be a producer, be a playwright. That may change as time goes on, but it is my choice. Thanks for bringing this up.
