Great topic. That old adage, “Drama is easy. Comedy is hard.” certainly applies. I’d be interested in getting your take on the difference between actors saying funny things and actors saying things in a funny way. Just curious. Thanks for your brain!

I would argue that Neil Simon made a CAREER off of cheap borscht-belt humor laughs, but he perfected it. In the same way rodney dangerfield perfected "take my wife, please", and groucho marx perfected the one-liner retorts and puns.T's K's and D's are ALWAYS funny. It's all about technique.That being said, there are a few people that just have a 6th sense into what will make a person laugh (reading the room). What we never see is all the times that person fails and their humor falls flat (or is not appreciated, because they incorrectly read the room or timed it) Timing is everything, none more so than with comedy.

I act in a very small market along with teaching and performing improv. One of the things I try to impress on my students is to act and react honestly to the scene in front of them, primarily using "yes and", which is just acknowledging the current reality of the scene. With scripted work, the more serious you take the circumstances the better. The story will provide the funny. Yes, there are things to enhance the comedy and those can be worked on in rehearsal.
